PM's passing mention of Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary
PM Narendra Modi flagging off the Run for Unity pays tribute to Indira Gandhi, who was assassinated this day in 1984, but passes it off in just one sentence: "Today is the Punya Tithi of Smt. Indira Gandhi."
The rest of the speech is devoted to Sardar Patel, whose birth anniversary it is today. Modi says, "Today is the inspiring day when we remember Sardar Patel. Sardar Patel joined Mahatma Gandhi and integrated the farmers in the freedom struggle. Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel...their bond remained unbreakable. Through his skill, vision and Rashtra Bhakti Sardar Patel integrated the nation. We can never forget his contribution. Our culture and legacy is of Unity in Diversity. Let us rise over differences of creed, community, language."

Venkaiah Naidu at the Run for Unity says that injustice has been done to Sardar Patel before and after independence. "After independence it took 40 years to award him with the Bharat Ratna. We must remember Sardar Patel for unifying India, irrespective of caste, creed, color into one nation," he said.
